He always told us he’ll be back and after several years in politics, Arnold Schwarzenegger is back and confirmed to star in Korean director Kim Ji-Woon’s (I Saw The Devil) Hollywood debut feature THE LAST STAND. Lionsgate have officially confirmed the 63 year old Austrian’s return to the big screen as a leading man, in a Western which sees the actor play the role of the sheriff of Border town whose partner is crippled after an botched operation.
After several months of will he, wont he? then will he be in this? that? throw in the baby scandal with a former maid, it now seems that Arnie has sorted himself out enough to start back on the career we all love to see him in, as a big action hero in front of a camera. After last year’s cameo in The Expendables his 2 minutes of fame impressed Lionsgate CEO Joe Drake so much that he was given the lead part in this flick.
“When he came on the screen in THE EXPENDABLES, it always electrified the audience. In this film, the Sheriff Owens character grapples with some really tough stuff, but ultimately triumphs, and we knew he’d truly elevate this high octane ride.” explains Drake.
Schwarzenegger was probably one the main pulls at the box office in the 1980’s as well as 1990’s, but after a string of disasters, along with a stint as a politician he’s sort of become the forgotten man in action movies. Does he still have the same stance to get bums on seats in cinemas and movie theatres worldwide? Possibly out of curiosity, people will flock to see this movie when it’s released, just to see what they have been missing; and if THE LAST STAND is a flop he could probably kiss any talk of future leading action man movies after that goodbye.
There is no word on when they expect THE LAST STAND to be released, though filming for this movie is scheduled to start this September; based on a script by Andrew Knauer and Jeffrey Nachmanoff.
Here is the movies official synopsis:
Schwarzenegger will be starring as Sheriff Owens, a man who has resigned himself to a life of fighting what little crime takes place in sleepy border town Sommerton Junction after leaving his LAPD post following a bungled operation that left him wracked with failure and defeat after his partner was crippled. After a spectacular escape from an FBI prisoner convoy, the most notorious, wanted drug kingpin in the hemisphere is hurtling toward the border at 200 mph in a specially outfitted car with a hostage and a fierce army of gang members. He is headed, it turns out, straight for Summerton Junction, where the whole of U.S. law enforcement will have their last opportunity to make a stand and intercept him before he slips across the border forever. At first reluctant to become involved, and then counted out because of the perceived ineptitude of his small town force, Owens ultimately accepts responsibility for one of the most daring face offs in cinema history.
