“Paramount Want Star Trek 2 in 3D” – Says JJ Abrams

Anyone who knows me and are regular readers of this blog know I jump at any chance to have a go at 3D Movies , plus I know I let my guard slip a bit with going to see Tron in 3d but Im still not convinced yet 3D Movies are worth the grain of salt. The excellent The Playlist blog posted a story stating that JJ Abrams was speaking to Vulture recently and told them Paramount want Star Trek 2 which has been slated for a 2012 summer release want the movie to be in 3d! We all know 3D isnt a new media format as some corners want us to beleive in, its just a a old format that has had its technology improved over the years but as Hollywood love 3D movies (though 99% of them a poor conversions), its getting the people through the doors into cinemas, according to them!

Its getting to the point that even digital tv channels like Sky have introduced set top boxes to watch not just movies but sports events in 3d! Football is a big thing for Sky and many pubs and bars around the country have invested in the boxes however the glasses to watch are very expensive and if they break it can be costly thats not forgetting the other extras you may need too. It seems now the pressure is on many directors to embrace the new technology, some like Zack Snyder has come out stating he wont embrace unless it enhances the story rather than the pockets of the film studio, but if recent stories are true Suckerpunch may still be 3D. Christopher Nolan has also stuttered at the thought of using the technology as well and now JJ Abrams has also voiced his concerns but he is feeling the pressure from the top.

In the Vulture post the director reveals that Paramount  want to take  Star Trek 2 to boldy go where no Star Trek has gone before into 3d movie world(pardon the punt, I know its cheesy!) ,

“I have nothing against 3-D in theory. But I’ve also never run to the movies because something’s in 3-D. [As for Trek], as soon as I read the script, if it says, ‘Somebody pushes a weapon toward the camera in a menacing way,’ and we think, ‘That’d be better in 3-D!’… I dunno.” Abrams reveals.

Abrams also goes on about Nolan’s concerns of the technology and how 3D has the ‘In Your Face’ approach that certain elements of the movie may not look good,

“I’m a big fan of whip pans, which is very hard to do in 3-D. You know, when I was in New York fifteen years ago, and I sort of had the flu, I remember turning the TV on. There were these kids in a very dark, kind of muddy movie that was on a local channel, talking about making out. Then you cut to them walking in the forest, and somebody had a paddleball, and they were doing it right to the camera. It was like this weird, experimental Fellini movie. I was like, ‘What the fuck is this movie?’ And it was ‘Friday the 13th Part 3’ in 3-D — without sex, violence, or 3-D! It was genius.”

The director is on board the movie 2 project but at this point he’s only onboard to produce as theres no director been confirmed yet and going what he said at the Television awards stateside a while back he’s waiting to check out the script first before making a decision:

“I guess the idea of not wanting to choose to direct a film, for which I’ve not read a script. It’s a tough decision to make without seeing any pages. That’s not to say that I don’t have all the faith in the world in the spectacular writers. Damon Lindelof, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are awesome. My hope is that they’ll write the script, it will be great and we can make a fun, exciting sequel to ‘Star Trek.’”

Hopefully during the summer some of the answers will be answered as by this point the cast will be nearly or getting assembled and a script will be on the table. Star Trek is entitled to be watched on a big screen near you but as for in your face 3D style hopefully Abrams or whoever is in place will see sense not to go 3D.
