The French Trailer for Paolo Sorrentino‘s THIS MUST BE THE PLACE starring Sean Penn has been released. The indie dramedy stars Penn as a gothic nazi hunting, ex-rockstar (hence the Robert Smith ala The Cure look). It made its world premiere back in May at The Cannes Festival, leaving the audience confused and puzzled in what they just watched, this is the same feeling you get when you watch this trailer. Penn is certainly choosing the movies that will baffle, confuse and question the reasons why you’ve watched the movie. There’s only one plausible reason to see Penn play the ageing goth, when you watch Penn you do get the sense that he probably thinks every movie he appears in must be a serious Oscar contender; some maybe, others you must be joking! Sadly, this oddball feels more like an I AM SAM performance than an Oscar worthy one. For now, until I see more of the film, I will sit on the fence, though at the moment I’m sitting in the overcrowded negative side.
No word just yet on a British, Irish or American release date which will either be late 2011 or early 2012.
