“Well Hello Clarice! Meet My New Found Friend!”- This week has been the week anything shown at the American Spike Tv Scream Awards has offically found its way online and today Apple have debuted online THE RITE starring Anthony Hopkins.
We seem to go through phases of movies been released been certain genres Westerns, Comicbook, sci-fi and now we have Exorcism movies. Last month’s Eli Roth hit The Last Exorcism took us into the heart of the deep south of USA but with THE RITE we go back to more old school ala Exorcist, building on the pyschological element with the supernatural feel.
The movie is based on the book The Rite: The Making of a Modern Exorcist by Matt Baglio inspired by a ‘true story’ which follows a young American Priest who goes to Italy to training as a Exorcist. Under the arms of his mentor (Anthony Hopkins) he starts off as an skeptic but through he starts to change his perspective as he becomes more challanged by the works of satan.
The trailer does look not bad but the release date is questionable (well more the American release date), of February 4th 2011 for UK and January 28th USA when maybe Warner Bros/Newline maybe could have released it earlier say around Halloween time challanging the tired franchises of Saw and Paranormal Activity, is it a sign that maybe Sir Anthony has signed up for another howler? only time will answer that question.
THE RITE is directed by Mikael Håfström with Alice Braga, Ciaran Hinds, Toby Jones and Colin O’Donoghue (as the young American preist) also starring.
