MIRAMAX R.I.P

Share Share

The last few years have been a very challanging stressfull time for us all, including business in all industries. Many companies going bust others been taking over by their larger rival or or 2 equal companies merging to make one big company, movie world got affected as well. But today another company bite the dust, well it was expected and today Disney have annouced the closure of  MIRAMAX FILMS.

Offices in New York and Los Angeles are closing with a loss of over 80 jobs, which isnt alot but loss of any job is bad in todays climate, I have recently felt the effect lossing a job I had only months on.

The company was founded in 1979 by the Weinstein Brothers Bob and Harvey and was one of the big independent movie  producers  & distributers. 1993 and again in 2005 Disney took the company over after years of coperate wrangling, fallouts,big egos, takeover bids and trying hard to keep up with the momentum.

The Weinstein Brothers went onto form there own company WEINSTEIN COMPANY;

“I’m feeling very nostalgic right now,” Harvey Weinstein told the site yesterday. “I know the movies made on my and my brother Bob’s watch will live on as well as the fantastic films made under the direction of Daniel Battsek. Miramax has some brilliant people working within the organization and I know they will go on to do great things in the industry.” – Harvey Weinstein on the death of Miramax (source -Coming soon article)

The Weintein brothers did however try in vein to buy the Miramax name back but Disney refused only saying the would seel the company as a whole for 1.5 billion dollars.

The back catalogue of Miramax is one to be proud off winning numerous oscar and other top awards; Shakesphere in love, the crying game, chicago, The Talent Mr Ripley, Pulp Fiction, The Piano, Cold Mountain, Aviator and clerks to name a few. They were also famous for making the movies that other companies didnt want to make: Kill Bill 1 + 2, Goodwill Hunting, Swingers.

The ending of the company left a bitter sweet taste in their mouths, after much arguing, overspending though did make a few respectable movies such asNo Country for Old Men,  The Queen and Tsotsi.
